Who We Are
We are Victorum Racing from St. Brigid’s College in Loughrea, Co. Galway and we are the F1 in Schools Irish National Champions for 2017. We will represent our country at the F1 in Schools World Finals in Kuala Lumpur and we are determined to become F1 in Schools World Champions. Our goal is to show the world that Ireland’s young people are able to lead the way for engineering, science and innovative thinking, and we firmly believe that we have the drive, determination and ability to win gold for Ireland on the world stage.
What We Do
The F1 in Schools World Final is widely regarded as the premier global competition for second level students, with 20 million students from all corners of the globe competing in the STEM based challenge. There will be 52 teams from 26 countries competing at this year’s finals, where we will be proudly flying the flag for Ireland. The competition is supported by Formula 1 and will run in conjunction with the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang Circuit in Kuala Lumpur. You can get a flavour for the magnitude of the world finals from this promo video from last year’s event in Austin Texas.
Meet The Team
The Resource Manager role has been a challenge I have thoroughly enjoyed.Communicating with companies, managing accounts, hitting deadlines and making our team work in as fluid a manner possible has made me stronger, more confident and organised as a person. The real world contact with the world of business has been an exciting experience for me, and this has opened up a whole new world of opportunity for me and my future career choice.
Team Manager/Innovation Engineer
The role of Team Manager has probably been the most challenging experience of my life. It really helps that we have such an excellent team bond and friendship as a group and our ability to interchange roles easily and support each other in our individual roles makes us a very dynamic and effective team unit. I see this as our major advantage when the pressure of competition comes around. The confidence and experience I have gained from F1 in Schools is something I see as a major advantage for my future career in engineering.
As Engineering Manager for Victorum Racing I have been able to really explore my passion for engineering and IT. The F1 in Schools competition has been a life changer for me as the experience I have gained has provided me with a focus for life after school. Something I love about the F1 in Schools competition is that it gives everyone the chance to learn new skills and also meet likeminded people from all over the world.
Our team brand is heavily reliant on making strong partnerships with people who believe in us and want to join our team. The Partnership Manager role meant that I had to sell our team concept to people and make them believe in what we are trying to achieve. As a keen sportsperson I relished the challenge of getting our team to the boardroom to go face to face with some of Irelands biggest companies. Mixing the business and engineering aspects of the competition and learning so much about both has made F1 in Schools a unique experience for me.
As Marketing Manager I have really enjoyed the challenge of getting our team brand and identity visible to a large audience. A highlight for me was meeting and working with our team mentors and I found their advice and real world experience enlightening. This competition has opened my eyes to a world of opportunity in business and STEM subject areas and I am a much more confident and outgoing person for the experience.
From the start we placed a strong focus on making connections with people that could add value and enhance our team’s skillset. As inexperienced young entrepreneurs we saw great potential in acquiring mentorship from successful people with a proven track record of success in business on a global level. A mentor allows us to access extensive experience in business from people with a vast network of connections and knowledge. The potential to receive guidance from such an individual really appealed to us and we felt that we could all learn and grow from the experience, so the earliest team activity for the world finals was to recruit a mentor that would take a leap of faith in us and join our team.
Getting the best mentors in our corner
Lady Chanelle McCoy was an obvious choice for us. With her company base in our hometown of Loughrea and her profile as a successful businesswoman and Dragon we knew that we could benefit a lot from her input and advice. Jim Breen has come to national prominence in recent years for tackling the major social issues of mental health and suicide head on, but in his day job he is an extremely successful entrepreneur. In the lead up to the National Finals we acted as ambassadors for the Cycle Against Suicide campaign and through this link a connection with Jim was an obvious choice. With a good pitch and some persistence, we were very lucky to get both our preferred mentors on board and their advice and mentoring has proven invaluable and has helped take our team to another level.
The Secret Millionaire
Jim Breen is the CEO and founder of Pulse Learning and in 2012 he participated in the Secret Millionaire TV show.
Lady Chanelle McCoy is Managing Director of Chanelle Medical Group and an investor on Dragon’s Den Ireland.
World Finals Car
We are delighted to unveil the Victorum Racing World Finals Car, the ‘Victus VI’.
Our car design has gone through many evolutions over the course of the last 18 months. Endless hours of testing and fine tuning have helped us create something special to grace the 2017 World Finals, and with the ‘Victus VI’ we are confident that we have achieved a car that matches the ambition of our team.
We wanted to bring our passion for innovation to the F1 in Schools World Finals, and as a result of this idea our team anthem ‘To Conquer’ was born. We want to show the world that we are determined to be F1 in Schools World Champions, but we wanted to do this in our own unique and fun way. Huge thank you to our Victorum Racing team mate, Evan Forde. When we learned that Evan could not make the finals because of his commitments to his amazing band Evoke, we knew we had to get him involved somehow. So when he came to us with this killer song it was clear what we had to do. We had an absolute blast recording it and we hope you enjoy the Victorum Racing team Anthem for 2017!
Maybe next year every team will have an anthem!!!
We want to take this opportunity to thank all our team partners for 2017 who have all been integral to our success. This is your chance to learn more about the companies who have supported and believed in us.
